Annie Pootoogook
You have until the end of the month to check out the exhibition Contemporary Traditions at Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain, featuring drawings by Cape Dorset artists Shuvinai Ashoona and Annie Pootoogook.
These “chroniclers of the everyday” capture the daily life of the North, from reflections on their spiritualism to mundane references to “Southern” consumerism. The artists’ colourful, descriptive drawings mirror the narrative tradition of the Inuit while including both contemporary and traditional aesthetics.
While Ashoona’s renderings are more dense in detail, Pootoogook’s floaty works rely primarily on the essentials of story-telling. (You may remember that Annie Pootoogook was the recipient of the Sobey Art Award in 2006.)
Both artists allow us a window into their world and like a comic strip without the speech bubbles, the story of their lives is told entirely through their art.
