Currently at Galerie Donald Browne the Dutch artist Marius Lut introduces us to his intriguing work, which at first glance appears to be a collection of prosaic, geometric shapes in vivid primary colours. Echoing industrial, utalitarian shapes such as logos or traffic signs, Lut’s work is punchy, clean and bright. But once you spend a little time with the pieces, you’ll notice the deliberate traces of the artist’s hand – layers of brushstrokes, a fly caught in the varnish, the warp of the enamel. Though the shapes of Lut’s works are ‘simple’, they all come with a twist: the semi-circles are trimmed at the edges, triangles are mildly distorted, edges are rounded off. So, make sure you take a closer look at Lut’s work – the more you look the more you find.
