Eclectic Puns

Galerie Lilian Rodriguez is showing a fun, eclectic mix of artists. On show are Suzanne Déry, Luce Meunier and Justin Stephens.

Suzanne Déry displays works created with gouache on paper and small sculptures made of plaster with gold leaf. Her pieces are all visual puns around the central theme of “time”. Her diptych La durée is a simple, nearly naïve painting of a wine label. The first painting shows the ornate label with its curly script “La durée” over a green background. On the second painting, half of the background has been replaced by a black night sky with stars. Time passes quickly when you’re drinking Bordeaux… Her sculptures are a collection of odd objects such as a pile of sticks, small rubber gloves or tiny doll boots, cast in plaster and then covered in gold leaf. They are placed on the gallery’s floor, making them look small and fragile. It’s amusing, but I’m still not quite sure what to make of it. Luce Meunier’s work is a series of black and white prints and some drawings on plastic. Meunier plays with repetitive, nearly random marks which have the feeling of a “lost writing”. There’s a nice balance between spontaneity and deliberateness in her mark making. My favourites were her coloured felt-tip drawing Les repères and the collagraphie Le grand détour. Justin Stephens small sculptures are made of found objects, mostly consisting of shoe-laces. They are enigmatic, but not visually captivating enough for me to spend a lot of time figuring out why the can of maple syrup has a shoe-lace sticking from it.
