Currently at Visual Voice Gallery runs the exhibition Lac de Feux by young Montreal painter Annick Langelier.
Her vividly coloured canvases echo the aesthetic of Chagall and Dubuffet, but Langelier adds her own quirky charm to her work. Her human and animal figures feature grotesque mask-like heads on shadowy, simplified bodies, but each face is deformed in a humourous way, making you smile. Langeliers rushed, forceful brushstrokes and her use of complementary colours resemble Art Brut, but there’s also a cheerful softness in her compositions and subject matter which balance out the roughness.
