A Room with a Clue

Photographer and fellow “Hamburger” Angela Grauerholz is exhibiting her recent works at gallery Art 45.

The massive 40″ x 60″ giclée prints on display have a magnetic presence. Each shot is a portrait of an interior space, some close-up, some wide-angle. Most of the shots are framed in a way that gives only the slightest clue to the room’s function. A bathroom? A hotel lobby? A spa? Grauerholz does allow some trace evidence into each image, though, to allow the viewer to speculate on each room’s story. A sad-looking room with concrete floors and plastic chairs is made even sadder once you spot the wedding cake sitting on the corner table. And what about the crazy wallpapering above the line of green tiles, with a post-it note just visible? And a curtain to match… I wonder what the note says. “Don’t put wallpaper in bathrooms”, maybe?
The gallery has absolutely no reference material about this series of works, so the artist’s intention regarding these “Recent Works” remain a mystery. But you could always drop by Art 45 and make up your own story.
