In Transit

Belgo Rep1 - Torres

Torres’ works are a series of sculptures which describe the artist’s reflections on his life as an emigrant. His nomadic lifestyle is recreated by a series of objects which seem themselves to be in transit. Everything in the gallery is on a palette, on rollers, or built from a shipping crate. He uses only two materials: untreated pine wood and earthy clay. Nothing is painted or “finished”, the sculptures look temporary, collapsable, utilitarian. But each object has a deliberate, minimalist aesthetic. I especially enjoyed the random pieces of earth, mounted on a wall, each framed by wooden slats, the shapes reminiscent of a footprint of a house. In front of each wall-piece stood a shipping crate on rollers with the shape of the “footprint” cut out of it. This work, as the others in this exhibition, aptly capture the temporary, ephemeral existence of the traveller who is always taking something with him and is always leaving something behind.
