When you step into the small exhibition room at the Centre d’exposition Circa your eyes are not, as usual, drawn to the walls but to the gallery floor. Montreal artist Angèle Verret has created a simple, yet elegant floor installation titled Se faire un nid… which draws our attention to the very thing we often neglect to notice: the ground we stand on. Verret’s work visually slices into the gallery floor, her simple intervention emphasizing the marks left behind by visitors, artists and their artworks, and the general wear and tear which brings out every wood grain and pockmark in the floor. The artist likens her ephemeral work to “building a sand castle in the wind.” Sadly, after June 6th Circa’s gallery floor will return back to its ordinary, mundane function of supporting our feet.
