Currently at Centre des arts actuels Skol runs the exhibit [ AIR PLAIN 2 ] by Montreal artist Sylvain Baumann. Baumann specializes in what he calls “architectual interventions”. For this exhibit he re-interpreted the Skol gallery space, creating an installation which outlines the gallery’s basic architectual features in a 80% scale representation. Using nothing but a thin, white scaffold Baumann draws the edges of the gallery’s walls, doors, and beams into thin air. The gallery resonates as an echo of itself, the volumes of the walls and rooms become transparent. Yet the architectual signifiers remain strong, and it is obvious where the visitors are supposed to move: the suggested openings still look like doorways, and it feels strange to walk through a “wall”. A simple concept, elegantly executed.
