Currently Galerie sas presents a series of paintings by David Holden.
Holden’s canvases depict vistas of suburban life – a school ground, a parking lot, a football field – rendered with great detail in a style harking back to 70s realism. The urban environments he carefully recreates are devoid of any human presence, except for some out-of-scale artifacts left behind which appear in the paintings like a collection of dream-like symbols. But what do these out of context objects tell us? That is really up to the viewer. A giant humming bird in a parking lot can be a clue to anything, though two large gift bags abandoned in front of a shopping centre are a fairly obvious reference. The artist has taken the trouble to supply a short artists’ statement for each of the paintings on display, if you’re stuck for a hint.
