Currently on show in galerie sas‘s Espace 2 is French photographer Pascal Mougin‘s exhibition ZI/ZA – Locaux d’entreprise des périphéries urbaines.
His photographs of small commercial buildings which are mushrooming throughout the contemporary French countryside have a surreal, abstract quality. While aesthetically captivating, the boxy, plain buildings feel distinctly out of place. At first glance one may even think these aren’t photographs at all, but computer generated vistas of an alien utopia. It is exactly this tension Mouglin is after, questioning the impact of industry on the romantic notion of the French landscape. I also find it amusing that the word “boîte” in French describes both a physical box and a small business. I wonder if this pun was intended.
