Not quite tired of winter yet? There’s a little bit of snow hiding out in Galerie B-312. The project a plan for a northern hemisphere by Geoffrey Jones features the most intrepid ball of snow – ever.
Perched on top of a small box of wood, contrasting with a piece of black felt, there it is: a semi-globe of real, actual snow. Tiny, delicate ice crystals fan out like a million little fingers. To make the set-up even more surreal, a spot-light and a fan are both aimed at the little ball of ice, determined on its destruction. But the snow just sticks around, like a never-ending Montreal winter. It is a wonderful piece of art: paradoxical, impossible, and a little humorous.
Geoffrey Jones specializes in constructing machines that complete improbable tasks. Actually, his focus lies more in the construction of the idea than in its execution. So, when you’re in Galerie B-312 in your short-shorts, enjoying the sudden onset of the Canadian spring, don’t be discouraged by the sight of lingering snow. It’ just the idea of snow you’re looking at.
