Worldbook

“This world does not belong to us, we belong to it.” This is the central message of Sigrún Jenny Bardadóttir series of drawings titled Worldbook, currently on display at the Visual Voice Art Gallery.

Sigrún Jenny Bardadóttir, “Worldbook Page #5”, Watercolour pastels and pencil on mylar

Her large drawings, executed with pencil and watercolour pastels on mylar, possess an elegance reminiscent of Lascaux cave paintings – but with a delicate twist. The animals Sigrún depicts are embellished with fine lines encircling their heads or radiating from their feet, some animals seem transparent, revealing their prey. Her work symbolizes a system of dependency: predator and prey, environment and individual, cause and consequence. Sigrún creates a floating world without horizon. There’s a rythm of organic, blurred stains contrasting with fine, dynamic pencil lines. Everything in this dreamy world is moving, coming in and out of focus, superimposing. Her drawings are subtle monochromes in sepia and graphite grey, giving her work a primodrial feel. By drawing on huge sheets of semi-transparent mylar, Sigrún underlines the ephemeral nature of her Worldbook; a fragile translucent medium for a fragile world.
Originally from Iceland, Sigrún currently lives in Montreal. She graduated from Concordia in 2007, where she has received recognition for her talent in 2005 when she received the Concordia Drawing Award. Though Sigrún still draws, she is now exploring the digital medium where she re-works her drawings, examining repetition and scale.
