Galerie Joyce Yahouda features the work of David Vas. Vas examines the concept of memory. The first room displays his photographic work of four triptychs titled Remember.
The first photo of each triptych is a portrait of a holocaust survivor, depicting an elderly man sitting at the corner of a table by candle light, with one elbow on the table and his head in his hand. The central photo shows an exterior shot, such as a cemetary or a length of barbed wire. In the third photo, each survivor shows a permanent injury to his body – a scar, a broken wrist. Vas’ work speaks of memories both visible and invisible, but always permanent. In the second room, his collages titled Memories of Childhood are less successful. He combines photos of his own childhood with those of his son’s, crudely cut out and glued onto naively painted backgrounds. They are meant to create “false memories”, but the result is far from trompe l’Å“uil, and the illusion isn’t convincing.
