Just started at the Visual Voice Art Gallery is the exhibition PAX by Jennifer Hamilton.

The show consists of a series of army surplus tarps, cut into pieces to emphasize their materiality: rivets, seams and fasteners become aesthetic elements. Bold lettering is stenciled onto each tarp proclaiming messages of peace. Hamilton modified famous Latin slogans for her PAX series, so you may nearly recognize quotes such as CAVE BELLUM and SI VIS PARCEM PARA PAX. But don’t worry if you don’t read Latin; the artist provides translations for each piece. I love the poignant contrast between the message and the medium of Hamilton’s strong, well-conceived artworks. Hurry, though, this exhibition will only last until Saturday, June 7th!
