Each environment Scott Everingham has created is an experiment and an encounter – one that has no visible beginning or end – but which speaks to him as very new and real. Paint is a major part of this illusion – it is both the language and structure of human form and architecture – which allows an audience to be involved in the story that is taking place.  Everingham is mainly interested in the ambiguity of how paintwork can represent living and static masses, where viewers may be involved the story at hand.

Everingham takes heavily from literary references and how a story is able to unfold by language alone.  He, too, is interested in a storytelling – albeit painted – in a way that extends beyond what is visible, and into the metaphorical, allegorical, and fictional.  Narratives live and expire as often as the materiality becomes structural or painterly. The paint often has insubstantiality, yet is grounded by moments of escape.  Windows, gaps, and breaking architecture act as exits or entries into parallel narratives that are at once hopeful and dire.

Departure – Group Exhibition at Les Territoires https://www.thebelgoreport.com/2011/01/departure-group-exhibition-at-les-territoires/ Fri, 21 Jan 2011 17:37:35 +0000 http://bettinaforget.com/TheBelgoReport/?p=1143
Departure

Curated by Marisa Portolese, Departure is an exhibition that brings together the photographic and video work of three young artists Matthew Hood, Flavia Majlis and Hans Ning. Focusing on family and the complex relationship between parent and child, the works in this exhibition are created through an autobiographical lens to highlight issues relating to abandonment, displacement and maternal mortality.

In Love Me/Love me Not, Flavia Majlis deals with how her husband’s decision to leave her has disrupted her family life. In a series of compelling videos and photographs, she depicts a psychological portrait of this sudden and unexpected separation through the voice and thoughts of her four-year old daughter Chloe. In Matthew Hood’s images from the commemorative series Mum and Me, he revisits his relationship with his late mother through emblematic objects that have remained as significant artifacts of his childhood memories. Hans Ning’s tableaux style series Fatherhood is not only inspired by his new role as a parent, but also by his relationship with his father who abandoned him at a very young age. Hans Ning uses a sensitive approach in his narrative based imagery to convey and recreate experiences he wishes he had with his own father and the bond he now shares with his daughter. Through the perspective of either child or parent, ideas alluding to absence, death, separation and the failure to communicate are explored in this exhibition.

The Freedom Fighter Manual – Juan Ortiz Apuy at Galerie Push https://www.thebelgoreport.com/2011/01/the-freedom-fighter-manual-juan-ortiz-apuy-at-galerie-push/ Wed, 19 Jan 2011 18:46:53 +0000 http://bettinaforget.com/TheBelgoReport/?p=1135
Juan Ortiz Apuy

Juan Ortiz-Apuy primarily focuses on language as the basis for his artistic practice.  Tracing a path from language as symbol to object and back again the mind of Ortiz-Apuy stumbles on the limitations and dead ends of words, positioning them as aesthetic devices that serve to root out, conceal, avoid and exploit meaning.  His latest project reproduces pages of a CIA manual that was air dropped over Latin American countries during the 1980s into seventeen individual prints. The CIA’s Freedom Fighter Manual was originally printed in Spanish with cartoonish pictographs explaining actions that could be used to rebel against the government.  It was later translated to English when it became declassified by court order. It exemplifies language as a place of struggle, where exchanges between identity and violence occur. By focusing on this publication Ortiz-Apuy delves into the archaeology of language, exploring its capacity to create images and representations of rebellion and compliance, darkness and whiteness, power and weakness. The Freedom Fighter Manual is a reactive exhibition where the viewer is charged with activating and de-activating the work. Sensor operated security lights dispersed throughout the blacked out gallery are triggered by the viewer’s movement. The paradoxical situation of an illuminated space revealing blank prints is thickened when the spectator causes darkness to resume.    (taken from press release)

Bettina Forget

Three artists explore the realm of dreams, meditation, and superstitions in the group exhibition titled Breathe. Dream. Fly. Bettina Forget’s unique prints illustrate an ancient text about a voyage to the Moon. Carried by spirits a lonely hero ascends into the sky to discover strange lands. Jennifer Hamilton’s large-scale mandala absorbs and hypnotizes the viewer with its rhythmic composition of details and spiritual symbolism. Annie Stephen’s enigmatic photographs suggest a narrative but leave most of it unexplained. Her carefully selected props and figures create a quietly haunting atmosphere. In the cold and quiet winter month of January, this exhibition invites visitors to take a rest, calm their thoughts, and let their minds fly.

Bettina Forget’s work focuses on astronomy, meteorology, and the forces of nature. Living in the dreamy space between randomness and control, her “multi-prints” are created by overprinting images nearly at random, and then pulling the composition together with a layer of paint. She is a visual artist living and working in Montreal, Quebec. Born in Germany, she has studied art at Central St-Martins School of Art in London, England and at Curtin University in Perth, Australia and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. She has had solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Canada, Germany, Singapore, and Nicaragua. Bettina is Director of Exhibitions of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) and President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) Montreal Centre.

Jennifer Hamilton is best known for her ephemeral art in the form of installations, printed publications, posters and stenciled drawings. She plays with words and symbols to create new meanings, asks questions and resurrects dead languages. The artist also publishes WAY magazine, which focuses on spiritualism and world religion.
Jennifer Hamilton earned a B.F.A. in Visual Art at Queen’s University, in 2003 and a M.L.I.S. in Librarianship from McGill University in 2010. She has exhibited extensively in Montreal and across Canada in group and solo shows. Hamilton is also the branding specialist and curator at Central Stamp & Seal in Montreal.

Annie Stephens’ photography and photomontages fall somewhere between the delicate and superstitious. Influenced heavily by the early surrealist and bauhaus movements of the 20th century and the imaginary landscapes of her childhood, her imagery is often experimental and personal, fantôme abstracts portrayed in intimate diptychs. Annie Stephens was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. Self-taught, she works with the simplest of tools, relying heavily on creative resourcefulness and the elements around her. In late 2008, she moved to Montreal and now lives and creates there. Most recently her work has been part of group exhibits in both Ithaca NY (”some quiet advice” curated by G. Jesiolowski) and St. Louis, MO (Drawgasmic, the Art + Illustration + Design Compendium), she was featured in the 2009 portfolio issue of Shots Magazine, and was chosen for the international 2010 30 Under 30, Women Photographers online exhibit.

Reaction at a distance : Collaborative drawings

It’s that time of year again! Here are some of the exhibitions/events happening in the Belgo this month.

Galerie Trois-Points:
Reaction at a Distance: Collaborative Drawings – Kristin Bjornerud and Erik Jerezano
November 20th – December 18th, 2010
Their collaborative project is essentially a correspondence through drawing. Separately, each of them begins a set of drawings to be exchanged through the mail and completed by the other. When they started the work a year ago, the guidelines they laid out for themselves were quite simple: there would be no rules about how they could alter the original piece and there would be no quitting whatever the results. This sharing back and forth without boundaries allowed them to work without inhibition.

Galerie Laroche/Joncas:
HOLI – Louise Masson
November 17th – December 24th
Holi is the name of an Idian color festival where participants throw different colored water and powder. Louise Masson’s portraits are based on photographs of people she took while traveling in India.

Galerie d’Art Visual Voice:
Homage to Jean-Paul Riopelle – Arnold Shives
December 2nd – 22nd, 2010
On one of his visits to Montreal, west coast artist Arnold Shives was asked to create an original black and white drypoint etching to accompany a poem written by John K. Grande and dedicated to artist Jean-Paul Riopelle. The project inspired Shives to expand this etching into a collection of artworks in homage to the late Quebec artist. Adopting various colors and textures to further mediate as well as explore the spirit of Riopelle’s work, Shives placed broken picture glass shards on his images and spray painted them in a process that evokes Jean-Paul Riopelle’s later works. Homage to Jean-Paul Riopelle employs a vigorous abstract language that Riopelle’s 1950s and early 1960’s painting embodies, as well as draws on the Snow Goose image that Riopelle so loved.

Galerie Les Territoires:
Call for video submissions – Monobandes
Deadline – February 4th, 2010
Monobandes will be presented from Wednesday, May 18th to Tuesday, June 7th, 2011.
The Jury’s selection criteria are originality, quality and the coherence of the artistic vision. There is no specific theme. The only limitation is to keep the length of each video to 10 minutes or less. Up to four videos per artist may be submitted.

Galerie Push:
Out Thinking in Circles, In Circles Thinking Out – Group Exhibition
December 2nd, 2010 – January 15th, 2011
Galerie PUSH is delighted to host Kyle Beal as guest curator of our latest exhibition: Out Thinking in Circles, in Circles Thinking Out featuring multi-disciplinary works by Amélie Guérin, Robert Hengeveld, Kris Lindskoog, Shawna McLeod, David Prince and Lucy Pullen. The work assembled in Out Thinking in Circles, in Circles Thinking Out deals uniquely and specifically with the circle or circular as the dominant formal or conceptual element. Turning around traditional connotations such as time, unity or the universe, to loopy spiritual rings and meanings found at the periphery, the works in the exhibition orbit a space from the horizon to the belly button. A text by Kyle Beal accompanies the exhibition.

HÉROS – Marie-Christine Simard at Les Territoires https://www.thebelgoreport.com/2010/12/heros-marie-christine-simard-at-les-territoires/ Tue, 07 Dec 2010 22:23:14 +0000 http://bettinaforget.com/TheBelgoReport/?p=1108
Marie-Christine Simard

An exploration of the sublime crosses over Marie-Christine Simard’s work in various ways: through photographic and pictorial work on landscape, through a visual exploration of scent and in seeking epiphanies in everyday occurrences.

The series Héros presents a cast of characters searching for a state of contemplation that belongs to the experience of the sublime. Each of them refers to an archetypal representation of courage in History, art history, pop culture or in the biographies of mythic artists. The hero represented here carries an accepted singularity. Their actions are subtle feats that rest on a know-how rather than an emphatic display of strength or excellence. The subjects expand our preconceived ideas of heroism without presenting antiheroes.
