Projet Pangée né “Galerie”

Galerie Pangée relaunched as Projet Pangée in November 2015. The space is the same, as is the focus on exploration within the worlds of contemporary art, literature and art consulting. It is still named after Pangea, the supercontinent that broke apart 200 million years ago to form the current continents. But with the revitalization to become a “project,” the mission is slightly different. During the time that Galerie Pangée was closed to the public, activities shifted to international contemporary art consulting and book publication. Now, instead of representing individual artists, the vision of Projet Pangée for the upcoming years is to provide emerging artists with its space and expertise. Ultimately, Projet Pangée hopes to increase recognition and appreciation of Quebecois and Canadian artists both locally and globally.

Projet Pangée is led by Julie Côté (Master of Library and Information Studies/Archival Studies, McGill University) and Joani Tremblay (MFA Studio Arts, Concordia University), and is overseen and financed by Pierre-Laurent Boullais (Contemporary Art & Literature expert and owner of Galerie Pangée since 2006).

This year, Projet Pangée presents a program featuring contemporary artists of Montreal, Toronto, New York and Helsinki. The gallery is open to the public Wednesday-Saturday, 12 pm to 5 pm. See below for current and upcoming exhibitions.

Drawing is the New Painting
January 14, 2016 – February 28, 2016
Collective exhibition
Artists: Annie Descôteaux, Claire Milbrath, Gabrielle Lamontagne, Louis Bouvier, Marie Ségolène C. Brault, Shauna Born, Shauna Eve and Tim Messeiller
The exhibition is an attempt at examining contemporary issues in current drawing practices. What is drawing today? Why drawing now? This selection of artist explores drawing as a malleable medium through collage, drawing on different surfaces, drawing as sculpture and drawing as performance. With a critical assessment, the artists rethought the traditional concepts of drawing and expanded the medium’s definition.

Palm Collective
March 10, 2016 – April 16, 2016
Collective exhibition
Artists: Elise Windsor, Sarah Osborne and Joani Tremblay
With a young and contemporary vision, this collective plays with simple, bold forms as well as large-format installation composed of several works on paper seen as objects. The gallery will be transformed into a living sculpture in the form of an installation with pop colors, mixing paintings, drawings, photographs, shelves, sculptural devices, plants and objects. Works on paper become objects displayed as in a showcase window, questioning the relationship between staging and curation. What influences this collective the most is the art world, flora, architecture and their status as women.
