In Korean the word soom refers to the actions of inhaling and exhaling. Agnese Yunjeung Yang’s exhibition reflects this life necessity through a series of paintings in which she embraces her oriental culture. The artist divides her time between, North America and Asia and it is this dual cultural existence that allows her to appreciate each one respectively on the basis of their dissimilarities. Through travel and distance from one social sphere to another; a clearer perspective on cultural identity is achieved. Yang’s transcultural inspirations allow her to practice the meditative state of soom throughout her work.
