Summertime in the Belgo means many galleries organize summer group shows until the exhibition schedule kicks back into high gear in fall. Over the next few weeks the Belgo Report will shine a light on individual artists who are taking part in the these group exhibitions to make sure they don’t get lost in the scrum.

We kick off the series with Sylvain Bouthillette whose work is included in the Éponymies exhibition at Galerie Trois Points.

In the last few years, the work of Sylvain Bouthillette has made a mark for himself through his creations inspired by the Buddhist quest of spiritual awakening. The animal motifs (cat, gorilla, squirel, crow, hare and cariboo) are an integral aspect of his works and key to his succes in the art world. « The principal idea of my work is a kind of concious meditation which includes images and objects of daily life. » From this theme, Bouthillette proposes a necessary spiritual transformation because the instinct of ownership we have toward these material objects freezes us and prevents us from evolving. The desire to possess is caused by the fear of emptyness which is equal to the fear of losing our individual identities.
