This year the Elektra International digital art festival is branching out, and has added three art galleries in the Belgo on its list of venues. Galerie Joyce Yahouda is hosting Pascal Dufaux, Skol presents Ian Wojtowicz and Ann Hirsch, and Galerie Push exhibits a mechanized sound installation by Swiss artist Zimoun.
You’ll hear the buzz of Zimoun’s installation as soon as you step out of the lift on the 4th floor. Mounted in a tidy row on a wooden panel the size of the gallery’s wall are 25 small DC motors which have long, thin metal wires attached to their ends. The motors spin, making the wires dance across the wooden surface, issuing a steady drone. As you step closer, the drone resolves into the individual clicks and snaps of each wire. The motion of the metal wires on the white panel leaves swirling, cloudy traces which will become more amplified as the exhibition continues.
The installation seems to be alive, like some electrified centipede buzzing inside a glass jar. Zimoun is interested in the relationship between the artificial and the organic, and this artwork clearly sits right on the cusp.
