The contemporary arts centre Optica currently presents a series of large-format paintings by Julie Beugin in an exhibition titled Making Space.
Beugin’s paintings are curious dreamscapes where interior and exterior spaces melt into one another seamlessly. Patios, living rooms and studies become transparent and are invaded by the outside world. Massive tree branches reach into a room’s ceiling, and floors give way to moss and pools of water. The effect is mildly unsettling, even though the colour palette is harmonious, even cheerful. With her work Beugin questions “simultaneous realities: mental space, dream space, how memory screens over the present.”
