Marie-Eve Fortier: Points de Suspension at Les Territoires

Marie Eve Fortier at Les Territoires

Marie-Eve Fortier created a lyrical, cryptic installation at Les Territoires titled Points de Suspension, using nothing but words, glass, and mirrors. Simple phrases, and sometimes only single words, are printed on small strips of paper and sandwiched between sheets of glass stacked on top of a series of wooden plinths. Her interventions are minimal, yet the impact is mesmerizing.

For one of her works she placed small pieces of paper with descriptions such as ‘le plafond,’ ‘la lumière,’ ‘les mouches,’ between sheets of glass, slightly offset so that they seem to step down. The green tint of the glass intensifies with each sheet, making it appear as though the words descend into a pool of water, possibly stepping into our subconscious.
For another work she used similar materials, but sliced off the bottom quarter of each piece of paper, removing a small part of the text. If you look straight down, the words floating on the top sheet of paper seem to be completed by a layer of words right underneath, but if you look at the piece at an angle you’ll discover that the words on the lower level are actually different, for example ‘grenier’ sits right above ‘craner,’ creating enigmatic couplings.

Fortier’s installation is a playful and intelligent, deceitful and poetic, and a delight to discover.
