Photographer Normand Rajotte has a sharp eye for details. Like a tracker he explores his forested estate at the foot of Mont Mégantic in the Eastern Townships, capturing the traces left by wildlife and the elements. His current exhibition Comme un murmure (suite), currently on show at Galerie Pangée, features 13 large prints from his latest series of works. Rajotte takes an unusual approach to landscape photography: instead of vast panoramas taken from mountain tops he crouches down in the tall grass and focuses on the delicate trails left by a rain worm in the mud, the hurried footprints of a bird, a beaver’s gnaw-marks on a stump of wood. These are small treasures, so easily overlooked, but delightful once they are pointed out to you. By enlarging these often microscopic views, the textures become lush, nearly abstract. Rajotte creates an intimate portrait of his terrain, and strolling from photograph to photograph is like taking a slow walk in the woods with an experienced guide.
