A Little Bit of Everything

If you’re looking for a painting to go over your sofa, take a stroll through Galerie L’Envol which just recently opened its doors in the Belgo Building.

The gallery is run by the Independent Artists Association (an off-shoot of the Baltic Artists Association) and exhibits works by its members. The variety of styles, subject matter and quality is dazzling. You will find Matisse-style portraits, Group of Seven-ish landscapes, Newman-inspired colour field paintings, flowers, still-lifes, city-scapes – all framed and ready to be sold. The gallery made an attempt to order the chaos by subject matter, but the overall feel of the exhibit is extremely incoherent. I don’t know what the qualifying criteria are to become a member of the Independent Artists Association, but I assume that a Joy of Painting is the common denominator.
