L’illustre gallery presents an exhibition of drawings titled Bic la Bohème by Montreal artist Julie Deschenaux.
Deschenaux practically wallpapered the gallery with her artworks, all of them black-and-white line drawings on paper. Her illustrations are executed with a practiced hand, some very dense and detailed, some loose and airy. Deschenaux’s style could be described as New Surrealism – her work is twisted and macabre, but with a humorous edge. The most frequent motifs are traditional symbols of death such as skulls and scenes of devourement, though I prefer the drawings of her grotesque animal characters.
