Culture, Clashing

You have another week to see the exhibition Occulture by Etienne Zack at the gallery Art 45.

Zack’s paintings are a contemporary re-interpretation of the classic still life. His large format canvases depict an overwhelming jumble of techno-debris: messy piles of abandoned computer monitors loom in the background, office furniture, papers and envelopes are strewn across the picture plane. Tying each canvas to the next is the recurring motif of paint tubes, arranged into giant heaps, juxtaposing new and old communication tools. Zack’s use of forced faux perspective, and his choice of bright colours which appear to come straight from the tube, make the paintings feel garish and oppressive. Carlo Carrà, revisited.
