A daring new exhibition just launched at Galerie Donald Browne. If you have a sense of humor and an appreciation of the absurd, make sure you see the exhibit Salonnard by Jérôme Ruby.
Ruby pokes fun at the bourgeoisie with his series of drawings and ready-made sculptures, all containing an ironic twist and a bit of shock-value. Take, for example, the beautiful antique sideboard which Ruby punctured with random bullet-holes and then topped with a giant ceramic sculpture with a remarkable resemblance to a massive turd. Or, my favourite, Ruby’s take on the classic Toile de Joie motif, which instead of romantic, rustic scenes depicts nude figures engaged in activities which would be frowned upon in a chic salon. I’ll never again look at that wallpaper in the same way…
