Galerie Normand St-Denis is presenting a collection of tribal embroideries from India in an exhibition titled Banjara Kaleidoscope.
The collection consists of antique embroidered textiles of fairly small dimensions, a reflection of the practical constraints of the nomadic Banjara people. Displayed on the gallery walls are cushion covers and head-dresses from the early 20th century. The simple, geometric shapes of triangles and squares make the textiles look like miniature colour-field paintings, while the warm, natural colours and the sewn-on cowrie shells transmit a strong tribal vibe, creating an interesting dichotomy.
