Currently on show at Skol is the show Material Concerns by Toronto artist Kerri Reid.
Reid’s artistic process involves strolling through her neighbourhood while keeping a close eye on the ground. She picks up discarded objects such as broken pots, chairs, bricks, a single puzzle piece, a solitary sofa leg – nothing is too lowly for her attention. After carefully documenting the object with a detailed ink drawing, Reid then sets out to reproduce the item several times. Now in a gallery setting, you’ll find perfectly re-created groups of clay shards, broken bricks, or a series of teapots which are split right down the middle. Alongside each collection there is additional documentation detailing how Reid attempted to trace down the owner of the missing puzzle piece, or how she advertised various discarded items on Craigslist or eBay. With this series of works the artist questions the value we place on our belongings and challenges our definition of “usefulness”.
