In the Belgo Building even a staircase is a venue for art. This afternoon interdisciplinary artist Cheryl L’Hirondelle scaled the Belgo’s central staircase as part of a performance titled Climbing the Iron Mountains.
L’Hirondelle made three trips up the staircase, clinging to the iron railings like a mountaineer, hauling up radio equipment with each ascend. After the final trip she assembled the equipment to set up a pirate radio station on the Belgo Building’s roof and broadcast clips of audio art (on 89.9 FM). L’Hirondelle’s aim is to permeate the air with art, and she uses sky-scrapers as a symbolic link between the earth and the sky.
This performance is part of the series Performance and Activism in Everyday Life organized by the art festival Mini Viva! which is hosted by La Centrale, with participating galleries Articule, Praxis, Dare-Dare, Clark, and the Belgo’s Skol.
