Shades of Black

Galerie Roger Bellemare currently exhibits two series of minimalist paintings by Quebec icon Fernand Leduc in an exhibition titled KOSOVO.

Bellemare - Leduc

Leduc’s series Viol de nuit and Nuits éclatées are a studies in Minimalism. My favourite between the two is Nuits éclatées, a series of 10 works of acrylic on paper, each a different shade of black. The effect these stark works on the white gallery walls is stunning, yet subtle. While at first glance the sharp contrast of the flat, dark paintings on the white background makes it appear as though each painting is simply a rectangle of black, closer observation reveals inky blues, coffee browns, and deep purples. The series Viol de nuit, however, is a little too subtle for my taste, all seven canvases appear steeped in the same shade of black. Very, very minimalist.
Make sure you check out the adjoining room where you’ll find two more works by Leduc from his more popular Chromatisme Binaire series.
